Things Needed to Start a Modeling Career

You'll need a lot more than just a pretty face if you have designs on becoming a model. Although some people are fortunate enough to be plucked out of shopping mall crowds by talent scouts, most aspiring models need to work hard to get themselves noticed by agencies and clients. Making it in the fashion world will be just as much about your personality and work ethic as your appearance.

Qualities

Apart from having the right "look," aspiring models need a certain set of qualities to make it in the fashion world. If you fancy a career as a model, you'll require good people skills. Models need to make a good impression on a wide range of people as part of their work, so you'll need to be polite, professional, prompt and respectful to progress in the industry, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. You'll also need to be well organized. You'll need to be able to arrange photo calls, interviews and travel schedule when you're just starting out. You'll also need to be photogenic. If you freeze up in front of camera, your career won't be going very far, no matter how attractive you are. It is important to learn how to be comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera.

Portfolio

All aspiring models need a portfolio of photos that demonstrates their range. This doesn't have to cost a fortune. In fact, the Storm modeling agency in London advises aspiring models not to pay for professional shots at all. It says that natural shots, without any makeup, provide the best indication of a model's potential. Aaron Newbill, director of scouting at Ford Models, told "Marie Claire" magazine: "The basis of a good book should show a model who is comfortable in front of the camera, one who has a range of expression and movement." Don't fall for scams from bogus firms offering to build you a winning portfolio in exchange for large sums of money.

Agency

The better the reputation and skill of your agency, the more assignments you'll be likely to get, according to the BLS. Research websites and publications devoted to modeling to find the agencies with the best reputations, then send digital versions of your portfolio to as many of these agencies as you can. If gave potential for success, somebody will likely get back to you. Check agencies' websites for information about open calls and auditions you can attend. Always visit agencies with a parent, guardian or trusted adult if you're under 18. If you're older, take a friend along with you.

Discipline

Standards are high in the fashion world, and competition is fierce. You'll need to be dedicated to keeping yourself in shape and looking your best at all times if you're going to have a successful career as a model. It is important to eat well, exercise regularly and get plenty or sleep. Avoid foods and lifestyle choices, such as heavy alcohol consumption, that will have a negative effect on your looks and prevent you from staying focused on your career.
